This recipe is easy because it contains just 3 ingredients; and only two if you’re watching your sugar intake. So here’s the deal: watermelon is already sweet, especially if you’ve chosen a really ripe, perfectly yummy and juicy one. But let’s be honest: not all watermelons are created (grown) equally and what’s even more mystifying, is not knowing until you get it home and crack it open if it’s a really “good” one, you know?

I’ve even consulted experts (okay, the internet šŸ˜‰ ) on how to choose a ripe one. They say things like check for heaviness, as that’s an indicator of ripeness. Also check the end of the melon for a golden yellow blotch, which also indicates its ripeness. And finally, thump the watermelon and listen for a deep, hollow sound. Okay, so clearly I need a stethoscope for my melon selection activities. Still, I feel the selection process is a bit of luck, since all those indicators can be there and you still can end up with a so-so watermelon. However, the good thing is that summertime brings an abundance of watermelons and you can’t go anywhere in the south without bumping into a roadside stand or grocery story practically giving them away.

So stock up, buy more than one if you can, because you can totally freeze those watermelon cubes for future use! And you should, because you’ll probably be making this watermelon slushie all summer just to cool off. Or, you might want to save half a watermelon and make this yummy melon ball salad.

The 3 ingredients are frozen watermelon cubes, lemonade or limeade – both work equally well, and optionally, sugar or a sugar substitute such as Swerve, If your melon is super sweet already and if your lemonade/limeade is pre-sweetened, you might want to skip the additional sweetener all together.

TIP: I keep an abundance of frozen fruits in my freezer for smoothies and slushies. For fresh fruits that are in season and that I want to freeze,Ā I use these silicone reusable ziplock bags. Money-saver and eco-friendly!

And finally, you’ll need a high-powered blender (this is what I use) to zoom it all up into a refreshing, summer, slurpy slushie. Enjoy!

Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie

Combine chocolate and cherries for a healthy and delicious Black Forest Protein Smoothie.

When fresh cherries are in season, I like to buy a bag, pit them, and freeze them for use in my smoothies. Off season, you can usually find frozen cherries in your grocery store, but make sure they’re pitted! You don’t have to use frozen, pitted cherries in your smoothie, but I like to add them frozen because I dislike adding ice to my smoothies. I find that ice dilutes the flavor while the addition of the frozen fruit keeps it frosty cold.

Here’s a super simple cherry pitter that may come in handy during cherry season!

I also add a frozen banana to this smoothie; it adds a little sweetness. I also add a bit of honey because the unsweetened cocoa can be sharp to the taste. I use unsweetened almond milk, so the addition of honey helps even out the flavor without being too sweet. Of course, adjust all to suit your taste, especially if you’re using sweetened almond milk or if your protein powder is already sweetened.

This is one smoothie recipe where I don’t blend in stages: I just add all the ingredients to my high-speedĀ blender (this is the one I recommend) and let ‘er rip! I do a taste test and adjust accordingly, such as adding more honey or more cocoa if that’s what my taste buds say to do.

Since I make smoothies daily, I keep an abundance of frozen fruits in my freezer. For fresh fruits that are in season and that I want to freeze, or like bananas that I peel and break in half, I use these silicone reusable ziplock bags. Money-saver and eco-friendly!

Apple Cinnamon Protein Smoothie

Apple Cinnamon Protein Smoothie

Protein smoothies are my life. Well, at least they’re my breakfast and lunch, or brunch, by the time I get around to finishing coffee and thinking about food.

Apples are abundant in the fall, and with so many varieties from which to choose, I had to break out of my favorite smoothie flavor and surprise my taste buds with my version of an apple pie smoothie.

I’m fairly certain I used the Honey Crisp variety of apples. I consulted this handy guide just to be sure. Really, though, I would experiment with different varieties. It’s always fun to try a new one and compare the difference in taste.

Smoothies, as I always mention, are best blended in stages to allow all the large and frozen chunks to blend nicely. Also, a high-powered blender will be able to handle frozen and large chunks more elegantly than a blender with less sturdy blades.

Since I make smoothies daily, I keep an abundance of frozen fruits in my freezer. For fresh fruits that are in season and that I want to freeze, or like bananas that I peel and break in half, I use these silicone reusable ziplock bags. Money-saver and eco-friendly!
